Settling Into You New Job
Settling into a New Job
Starting a new job is an exciting chapter. Whether you’re stepping into your very first role or moving into a new position with more experience under your belt, that first week can bring a mix of nerves, excitement and curiosity. At Inspire EHC, we know how important it is to feel supported and confident during this time. Here are some friendly, down to earth tips to help you settle in smoothly and enjoy the journey ahead.
Be kind to yourself
It’s perfectly normal to feel a bit out of your depth in the early days. Everyone has a learning curve when they start something new. Give yourself permission to not know everything straight away. Take a deep breath, ask questions when you need to and remember that every expert was once a beginner.
Take notes
There’s usually a lot of new information flying your way in those first few days. Bring a notebook or use your phone to jot down names, procedures, passwords and anything else you’ll want to remember later. It can be a real lifesaver and shows that you’re organised and keen to learn. Make sure you know who the Safeguarding Lead is and what to if you need to speak to them.
Learn the lay of the land
Spend time getting to know your new surroundings. Where’s the kettle? Who can help with IT issues? Is there a lunch rota? Little things like this can help you feel more at home and avoid any awkward moments.
Build relationships
Take the time to chat with colleagues, even if it’s just a friendly hello in the corridor or a quick cuppa in the staffroom. People are usually happy to help and a few small conversations can go a long way in making you feel part of the team. Make yourself as useful to others as you can; if you can see a task needs doing, do it.
Stay positive and open minded
No job is perfect and there might be moments that feel overwhelming. Try to keep a positive mindset, stay open to new ways of working and be willing to adapt. It’s all part of the growing process and it gets easier every day.
Ask for feedback
After your first week or two, it’s a great idea to check in with your manager or mentor. Ask how things are going and whether there’s anything you can improve or do differently. It shows initiative and gives you the chance to keep learning and growing.
Celebrate your small wins
Did you remember everyone’s name? Found your way to the staffroom without getting lost? Managed the school system on your own? Brilliant! Recognise the little achievements and be proud of the progress you’re making.
Remember, you’ve got this.
A new job is not just a fresh start, it’s an opportunity to shine. Be patient with yourself, stay curious and don’t be afraid to lean on your support network. Here at Inspire EHC, we’re cheering you on every step of the way.
If you ever need advice or just a friendly ear, we’re only a phone call or email away.
