Creating success in the classroom

As schools try and keep up to speed with the way education rapidly changes, the role of teachers and teaching assistants has transcended the traditional boundaries of developing knowledge and critical skills to make the way they create success in the classroom for everyone more efficiently. It may seem a whirlwind trying to keep up with ways to make the most of teaching and supporting students in school but by finding out methods in this blog post, you will be able to master success quicker than you can complete a formula of Algebra!

The classroom environment sets the stage!

Teachers and support staff set the stage for success by establishing a classroom culture that encourages everyone to ask questions, interact and be fully involved in the learning! Inclusivity and kindness are also one of the main ways to promote a successful classroom environment as without that, an uncontrolled formula will develop in a way that some students will succeed, and others will fail to the point their needs cannot be met! Creating a classroom environment where everyone can be part of the learning can classroom success for you, the staff and students and prevent an environment where it feels like you have been sent to prison!

Not everyone is the same!

To be able to create success in the classroom, you must realise that every student in there is different, especially when they have additional needs that need to be approached carefully. Thinking that Tim is the same as Tom and Sarah is the same as Sasha is a polarising approach and solves nothing in finding successful solutions for the student. Use resources differently for some students compared to others because it’s possible Tim may need to use braille to write something down whilst Tom might need to use visual images to describe the same thing. In the same way that Sarah may need to take a few minutes out of the classroom to control her behaviour whilst Sasha just needs to be told straight and she will stop, these are different methods to make a classroom a successful learning environment!

Communication is key!

The key to creating a successful classroom environment is by communicating to everyone including the staff and students. Without communication, everything just becomes one muddy old mess, and nobody benefits from that! By communicating with the assistants in the classroom effectively and creating a student-focused plan that meets their needs, they will be able to supply the right support to the students and with the right communication with the students, they will be able to make use of that support and contribute to a successful classroom environment.

Getting the right resources is rewarding!

Many ways of creating success in the classroom flows through the type of resources and student-focused work that you give to the pupils in your lessons. In special schools, this is even more crucial because different students with additional needs will require the adaptation of different resources to be able to meet their own requirements. You and other staff will be working with many different students that have many additional needs that can have a direct impact in how they approach the resources given to them. Not everyone is going to magically be able to understand whatever written English or numbers are on that resource! Some might need Braille to understand letters or words whilst others may need pictures to help the complete the task. Whatever is required, adapting is the model to being able to help those who need it the most and widening a division from skilled students to those who struggle. If you use the right resources for the students, you can help contribute to reducing the division in abilities and create success in the classroom!
