A simple half-term checklist for planning classroom support

Half-term is a useful point to pause and think about what pupils and staff may need for the next part of term. A short check-in now can help everyone return with clearer expectations.
Before the break, consider:
- Routines: Are there parts of the school day that would benefit from a reminder or clearer structure?
- Communication: Do staff know how a pupil prefers to receive instructions or ask for help?
- Transitions: Are there changes between lessons, activities or spaces that need extra preparation?
- Useful information: Is the relevant support information easy for the staff who need it to find?
- The first day back: What would help pupils feel welcomed and settled when they return?
There is no need to review everything at once. Start with one or two practical questions: What is working well? What is becoming difficult? What would make the first week back feel more manageable?
If staffing needs have changed, it can also be helpful to raise them early. A clear conversation about the setting, support required and likely timescale gives a recruitment team a better starting point.
At Inspire EHC, we work with schools and education settings to discuss staffing support. If you are planning for after half-term, get in touch with our team.
