Your Role as an SEN Teaching Assistant

You will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support guided by teachers and therapists
  • Assist with communication strategies and behaviour support plans
  • Take part in outdoor learning, forest school sessions and hands‑on activities
  • Build trusting, nurturing relationships that help pupils feel safe and understood
  • Play a key part in helping children regulate, learn and grow each day

The role focuses on providing consistent, tailored support to help the pupil engage effectively in learning, build confidence, and develop emotional regulation and social skills. You will work closely with teaching staff and the school’s SEND team to deliver personalised strategies, adapted learning tasks, and calm, nurturing encouragement throughout the school day. Key Responsibilities Provide individualised 1:1 support to a Year 4 pupil across lessons, transitions and structured activities. Implement personalised learning strategies and behaviour support plans under the guidance of the class teacher and SEND team. Offer emotional support, helping the pupil with regulation, focus, and relationship-building. Adapt resources and break down tasks to promote understanding and independence. Encourage engagement, resilience and positive participation in classroom routines. Observe and record progress, contributing to reviews and planning discussions. Person Specification Essential Warm, kind and empathetic communication style. Experience supporting children with additional needs (SEMH, SEND or behaviour-related challenges). Resilience and adaptability within a setting that prioritises emotional wellbeing. Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive practice. Desirable Experience in a 1:1 or SEND-focused role.
